Jeremiah Smith Ohio State Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith (4) runs the ball against Purdue Boilermakers linebacker Hudson Miller (40) in the first half at Ohio Stadium on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2024 in Columbus, Ohio.

Ohio State Buckeyes wide receiver Jeremiah Smith has been a force this season. The freshman sensation has transitioned well to college football. The season’s not over, and he’s set a new mark for the historic Buckeye program.

Smith scored yet another receiving touchdown on Saturday in a rout of the Purdue Boilermakers. With that touchdown, Smith became the all-time leader in receiving touchdowns for freshmen at Ohio State.

So, in other words, move over Cris Carter.

Carter’s record 11 touchdowns in his freshman season stood for the last 30 years. There’ve been many tremendous wide receivers to come through the OSU program since Carter. But none have quite set the world on fire like Smith has. Whih is saying something, given the level of talent at that position over the years. It’s been a definitive position of strength. In this case, it’s a position of absurd strength.

The Buckeyes have two big remaining tests left in Indiana and arch nemesis Michigan. With how he’s playing, Smith should continue to be an X-factor the rest of the way for the team. And, oh yeah, he’s only a freshman. So the best may still be to come. If that’s the case, everyone else needs to worry a bit more.
