On Tuesday morning, the Oklahoma Sooners’ football program became the subject of conversation. Sooners staffer and former star DeMarco Murray received a one-game suspension after the NCAA found him violating recruiting rules.
Murray had impermissible contact with several recruits, resulting in the one-game suspension penalty he received ahead of their season opener.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel noted the suspension that Murray will serve.
NCAA rules a one-game suspension for Oklahoma football assistant DeMarco Murray. Impermissible contact with 17 prospects over 16 months. https://t.co/zxB7lExlKA

The NCAA said, “The school, Murray, and the enforcement staff agreed that the violations in the football program occurred when Murray impermissibly contacted 17 prospects over 16 months, including 65 impermissible phone calls and 36 impermissible text messages.
They continued: “Murray indicated that he was not aware that a COVID-19 waiver of recruiting contact rules had expired. During the investigation, the enforcement staff determined that the school had properly educated football coaches on the applicable recruiting rules and the timing of changes to them.”
OU doesn’t appear to want to challenge the ruling, so Murray will serve his suspension, and the program will move forward. Oklahoma opens the 2024 college football season, their first in the Southeastern Conference, this Saturday. The Sooners will host the Temple Owls in their season opener in Norman.
The college football world had much to say over the news.

Impermissible contact with 17 recruits: one game suspension
Buy a cheeseburger for two recruits: 1 year suspension and a four year show cause. The NCAA is a farce (let’s also not pretend this isn’t going on at every school with every coach). https://t.co/wUITTdjo4z

Oklahoma’s DeMarco Murray made 65 impermissible phone calls + sent 36 impermissible texts to 17 prospects over 16 months.
The NCAA release also states that Brent Venables violated head coach responsibility rules, but a suspension penalty was not deemed appropriate in this case. https://t.co/V83aRVJNEc
