The quarterback drama for the Pitt Panthers is reportedly over.
ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Pitt has made its pick for its 2024 starter. The Panthers will name Eli Holstein, a transfer from Alabama, the starting quarterback for this season.
“Pitt to start Alabama transfer Eli Holstein at QB,” Thamel said on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

Holstein hasn’t seen major college football minutes yet in his career. His stop at Alabama was brief, as he transferred from the Tide after one season in Tuscaloosa. Jalen Milroe and his stranglehold on the quarterback position down there likely contributed to that.
Nonetheless, he’ll get his shot with the Panthers who hope to be among the ACC’s best this season. Pitt has been a player in recent years, but they haven’t broken through quite yet. There’s also nowhere to go but up after a disastrous 3-9 season in 2023.
Pitt will open the 2024 college football season this weekend against the Kent State Golden Flashes in Pittsburgh. Holstein and the Panthers hope to make a statement in that game as they begin anew like everyone else. The season is just a few hours away from its official commencing.
