The Michigan Wolverines will look much different when they open the 2024 season against the Fresno State Bulldogs on Saturday.
Jim Harbaugh, JJ McCarthy, Blake Corum, Roman Wilson, and countless other players and personalities from the 2023 undefeated national championship squad have moved on to the NFL, leaving former offensive coordinator Sherrone Moore as the squad’s new head coach with a lot of decisions to make.
Moore’s most significant decision concerns Michigan’s starting quarterback for the season. While it seemed as though redshirt sophomore Alex Orji would easily secure the job, junior Davis Warren has performed well in camp and made Moore’s choice difficult enough that he’s still not ready to name a starter.
“We’re gonna give ourselves a couple practices in the week. If it takes Wednesday, it’ll take Wednesday and probably tell the guy on Thursday. And then whether we report that, say it out loud on Friday or day of the game, we’ll make that decision as we go and as they feel comfortable too…We’ll try to make sure to make that decision here soon,” Moore said Monday night on his Inside Michigan Football radio show via Sports Illustrated.
Moore also noted that senior Jack Tuttle could factor in once he recovers from a Torn UCL.
Orji and Warren also have very different play styles, with Orji being more of a scrambler and Warren being more of a pocket passer. Switching off between the two quarterbacks like the Wolverines did with Cade McNamara and JJ McCarthy in the 2021 season could also be an option.
