Texas Texas Longhorns edge Colin Simmons (11) celebrates sacking UTSA quarterback Owen McCown (2) during the game at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin Saturday, Sept. 14, 2024.

coThe Texas Longhorns are the top-ranked team in the country. Texas is back on top of the Associated Press poll for the first time since the 2008 season. It’s been a long time coming, but the Longhorns are back among the elite.

Fox’s Joel Klatt has been impressed.

Last Saturday, the Longhorns defeated UTSA without much difficulty. And that came even without Quinn Ewers, who went down with an oblique strain. Touted quarterback Arch Manning took over and Texas still looked great.

“How about Arch Manning and the Texas Longhorns?”Klatt said on The Joel Klatt Show.

Klatt discussed that he had high hopes for the Longhorns because of their great depth.

“Texas, I always felt like, was very deep this year,” he said. “It’s one of the reasons I felt like they were such an elite team after covering them live and studying them for that game against Michigan. I was so impressed with their depth, and part of that depth included the backup quarterback.”

Klatt said that much of what everyone discussed about Manning was the theory, but practice finally came on Saturday.

“This was really the first time that we got to see it,” He said. “Like see him have the entire offense at his disposal, see him run the offense with Sark being uber aggressive calling the plays. See him be able to run on the edge.

“All that did for me was solidfy the fact that I think Texas is one of the best teams in the country,” Klatt said. “And because I feel that they’ve done more on the field than anybody else, I put them at No. 1.”
