When the Oklahoma Sooners and top-ranked Texas Longhorns take the field at the Cotton Bowl this Saturday for the Red River Rivalry, it will mark the 120th iteration of one of college football’s oldest rivalries.

While the Longhorns are the heavy favorites due to their perfect record and quarterback Quinn Ewers’s return from an oblique injury, you never know what to expect in a rivalry game of this magnitude.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian is all too familiar with this. As head coach, Sarkisian is 1-2 in his three Red River Rivalries. Despite having the better team on paper, the 50-year-old was quick to say that the records aren’t relevant in a game like this while speaking to the media earlier this week.

“It’s a rivalry game. Forget whatever we’re favored or we’re not, it doesn’t matter. The records and things don’t matter in games like this,” Sarkisian said during his weekly availability via On3.

The Longhorns also have to be careful not to overlook the Sooners in favor of what the future could hold for them. Texas is the SEC’s lone undefeated team and has the fast track to both the SEC Championship and College Football Playoff.

As we saw last weekend, though, one bad week is all it takes for things to change. Ask the Alabama Crimson Tide, Tennessee Volunteers, or Missouri Tigers.
