Texas State could have joined the Mountain West Conference, but the Bobcats will stay put.

Amid a sea of changes in the middle of the pack in the NCAA, Texas State won’t leave the Sun Belt Conference quite yet.

Texas State’s Athletic Director Don Coryell announced on Tuesday night that the program will remain in the Sun Belt, balking at a jump to the MWC.

“The recent interest shown in Texas State and its presence across the college athletics landscape speaks volumes about the university and the work our staff and student-athletes have done to build the Bobcat brand nationally,” Coryell said. “After preliminary discussions with an interested conference, we have decided not to make a change at this time.”

Coryell added, “I’m looking forward to watching all of our sports continue to compete for Sun Belt Conference and National Championships.”

The MWC and the Pac-12 have each made moves this season that will go into effect in later years. The Pac-12 is hanging on and needs one more football program to get up to eight. They’ve added Gonzaga, Boise State, and San Diego State in recent weeks, among others.

But the Bobcats won’t be the one to make a move yet. The Sun Belt rides on with them for now, eluding another mess in the world of conference realignment.
