It’s safe to say that Urban Meyer is not a fan of the NCAA. The former three-time National Champion head coach had choice words for the organization, and quite frankly, it’s hard to disagree with what he said.
Meyer discussed the challenges that have surfaced after Matthew Skula departed from UNLV. Name, Image, and Likeness has helped student-athletes in ways never seen before. But there are still challenges. The NCAA hasn’t seemed to do much about them. Meyer went off what he now considers a “toothless” organization.
“So the NCAA, when I first started coaching, they were in charge. It was the NCAA, everybody was horrified by the NCAA,” Meyer said on The Triple Option podcast. He explained that they were much more threatening while he was a coach.
“You know what the NCAA’s become? A toothless organization,” he said. “A decade ago, they averaged $10 million a year in legal fees. Now, it’s $234 million over the last four years.”
Meyer slammed the organization for spending all this money on legal fees and being a loser in court afterward.
“No rules,” Meyer said of the current state of the sport.
The NCAA certainly has earned every bit of criticism they’ve gotten over the last few years. And in this case, especially so.
