The Utah Utes have been perhaps the most disappointing team in the Big 12 this season.
After jumping from the Pac-12 over the summer, the Utes were picked to win the conference at July’s media day. Media members thought veteran quarterback Cam Rising would propel the Utes to the conference championship and College Football Playoff.
Unfortunately for Utah, they enter the season’s final stretch at 4-5 overall and just 1-5 in conference play. They’re tied with the Arizona Wildcats for second-worst in the conference, ahead of just the winless Oklahoma State Cowboys.
The biggest issue for Utah this season has been quarterback play. After missing the entire 2023 season with a knee injury and garnering a medical redshirt, Rising has been plagued by injuries again, appearing in just three games this season.
Sam Huard, son of former NFL quarterback Damon Huard, was also set to be in the mix for Utah’s quarterback depth. Huard transferred to the program in the offseason. However, he never appeared for the Utes and had surgery ‘some time ago,’ head coach Kyle Whittingham said earlier this month.
A third quarterback injury has now plagued the Utes. Whittingham confirmed Tuesday night that Brandon Rose, who started Utah’s 22-21 loss to the BYU Cougars over the weekend, was also done for the season with a leg injury.
Utah now turns back to freshman Isaac Wilson, who had been the starter after Rising’s injury. Wilson has struggled this season, however. He’s gone 98-for-177 for 1,200 yards and eight touchdowns to eight interceptions.
The Utes head to Boulder this weekend to take on the Colorado Buffaloes.
