The Ohio State Buckeyes routed Purdue 45-0 on Saturday. It became a historic day in Columbus as Jeremiah Smith set a new record for freshmen wide receivers at Ohio State. After the game, Quarterback Will Howard had nothing but great things to say about his superstar wide receiver.
Smith broke Cris Carter’s longstanding record for most receiving touchdowns in a season by a freshman. Carter set that mark back in 1984, and thirty years later, someone’s toppled it. Smith has drawn colossal praise from scouts and pundits, and he continues to prove why those words are on the button.
Howard waxed poetic about Smith and the other talented receivers around him.
Dan Hope posted, “Will Howard said ‘he’s not surprised in the slightest’ that Jeremiah Smith broke all of Ohio State’s freshman receiving records.
“I think he’s the best receiver in the country,” Howard said via Hope. “I think we have the three best receivers in the country, but I’m biased,” he added.

Smith, Carnell Tate, and Emeka Egbuka are a heck of a trio. So even while Howard might be “biased,” he’s not too far off with his assessment. There’s a reason why Ohio State has developed a reputation at the wide receiver position. Garrett Wilson, Chris Olave, Terry McLaurin, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and many more have had great careers both at Ohio State and in the NFL.
Those trends may continue if things go right for the Buckeyes this year. Ohio State still has National Championship aspirations that are still in sight.
