A former five-star college basketball recruit and SEC Tournament MVP announced over the weekend that he will be walking away from the sport.
Guard Jahvon Quinerly, who most recently played for the Memphis Tigers after stops with the Villanova Wildcats and Alabama Crimson Tide, announced the news on his Instagram on Saturday.

“To the majority, I will always be remembered as a failure. But while that may be the case in basketball, they say the greatest successes in life often emerge from the most difficult setbacks.” pic.twitter.com/4bOlcPDqtd

Quinerly’s statement was brutally honest. The former five-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American noted that his baseball career was a failure, but he looks forward to life after the sport, and the money he made in NIL will help him. He also mentioned the incredible experiences and accomplishments basketball gave him.
Quinerly originally committed to Arizona in 2017 but re-opened his recruitment and committed to Jay Wright and the Villanova Wildcats. He averaged just 3.2 points in nine minutes per game for the Wildcats and transferred to Alabama after the season.
Alabama was the fresh start Quinerly needed, as he averaged 11.9 points per game in his three seasons with the school and brought home the 2021 SEC Tournament MVP.
Quinerly spent his final season at Memphis, where he averaged 13.5 points and a career-high 4.9 assists per game under Penny Hardaway.
