The Notre Dame Fighting Irish men’s swimming team is facing serious issues. SI’s Pat Forde reported that the Irish swimming team will be suspended for the entire 2024-25 year due to gambling allegations.
“Notre Dame is suspending its men’s swimming program for the entire 2024-25 academic year after investigations revealed swimmers created an internal sportsbook to gamble on their performances, plus other ‘corrosive culture’ issues,” Forde wrote.
Forde emerged with the news on X, the website formerly known as Twitter.

Forde writes that the team “effectively created its own sports book for the purpose of wagering on their swimming performances.” Forde said that they made a plethora of bets of different varieties, like for a swimmer’s time in races , for example.
Athletes can still transfer from Notre Dame before the August 27 deadline, Forde writes. The team’s head coach was not implicated in the case, so he did not receive any punishment.
Obviously, the NCAA, like many others, are dealing with the consequences of the surplus in the gambling industry. Accessibility has led to more pervasiveness in the industry, which has its fair share of downsides, as shown everyday.
The sports world reacted to the shocking Notre Dame news.
Seems like a potential huge overreaction if it really was basically a variant of “I bet you can’t do X”
They even say books don’t take bets on the sport. This ruined the integrity of the events? https://t.co/0dfxHo7cOF

All the sports business aggregator keyboard warriors who were championing this sports betting stuff as some Great Leap Forward for society a few years ago owe this country an apology.
The genie’s not returning to the bottle. Get ready for a lot more of these type scandals. https://t.co/mtlZ8SoHDs

The rottenness in college athletics departments and within team cultures is higher than we know. It’s not just that the culture on individual teams is rotten. https://t.co/NYBHKby37Z
