The NCAA transfer portal is one of the most frequently discussed topics in college sports. On Tuesday, the portal underwent a significant change.
The window for student-athletes to use the portal shrunk on Tuesday. The NCAA D1 Council moved to decrease the portal window down from 45 days to 30. The sweeping changes, noted by NBC Sports and The Athletic’s Nicole Auerbach, will affect football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball, among other spots.
“The NCAA Division I Council has voted to shorten the transfer portal windows for FBS football, FCS football and men’s basketball from 45 total days to 30 days,” Auerbach wrote.

Women’s basketball transfer windows are shortening from 45 to 30 days as well. They’ll match men’s basketball dates.

These sweeping changes will likely affect student-athletes in their urgency to move through the portal. Of course, it’s also arguable that 30 days should be plenty for them to move. That’s a difficult point to disagree with, which probably explains why there was little to no pushback on the news.
Since the transfer portal activated, student-athletes have been able to move to different schools at rates never seen before in college athletics.
Among the many reactions to the news? Several still think that there’s work to be done.
Sure it can prove to be a double edged sword at times but a 45-day transfer window seemed way too long. If you’re effective when recruiting out of the portal 30 days is not too short of a time frame. https://t.co/qUukKT7KN3

Good move. 30 days plenty. Don’t need to make a decision by then so plenty of time https://t.co/Hw6BynqxtP

So if the portal opens the day after Selection Sunday, as it has recently, then that means the portal will close 9 days after the national championship?
That feels quick https://t.co/J0XE02IAr8

The fact the spring window remains intact means these changes are basically worthless. G5 teams are still going to get hammered by sudden departures in the spring because P4 teams want to pad their rosters and the G5 teams won’t have any recourse for blatant poaching. https://t.co/g8T7mN4F5R
