Michigan Michigan defensive back Will Johnson (2) celebrates a touchdown after intercepting USC quarterback Miller Moss (7) during the second half at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Sept. 21, 2024.

On Saturday, the Michigan Wolverines defeated the USC Trojans in their Big Ten opener. Michigan won dramatically, as Kalel Mullings plunged into the end zone in the final minute to lift the Wolverines ahead. A defensive stop later, and the Wolverines celebrated a much-needed win. That victory came thanks to All-American cornerback Will Johnson.

Johnson returned an interception thrown by Southern Cal quarterback Miller Moss for a touchdown.

That interception helped the touted defensive back make program history.

“The most pick sixes in school history!” Michigan boasted on X after Johnson’s historic interception.

Johnson is one of the team’s bright spots this season. The Wolverines have dealt with some harsh recoil after their title-winning season a year ago. Turnovers and a lack of quality play at quarterback have had fans in despair at times this year. Even their victories over Fresno State and Arkansas State haven’t seen them look superb.

But the Wolverines and their fans got to celebrate in Ann Arbor on Saturday night. USC appeared to have it all figured out. After this loss, there’s clearly more work to be done still. Back to the drawing board, but for Michigan, it’s a major reprieve. And a historic moment for one of their best players ever.
