As the Wisconsin Badgers enter their second season under Luke Fickell, the team’s training camp featured a quarterback competition.

Miami Hurricanes transfer Tyler Van Dyke and Mississippi State Bulldogs transfer Braedyn Locke competed for the job. On Wednesday, the Badgers made their decision.

Speaking to the media after practice, offensive coordinator Phil Longo announced that Van Dyke had won the job.

Van Dyke committed to Miami in 2019 and served as a backup to D’Eriq King for the 2020 season.  He was poised to serve as King’s backup again in 2021, but King suffered a season-ending injury three games into the season leading to Van Dyke starting the remaining nine games.

2021 was Van Dyke’s best collegiate season. He threw for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions in the nine games he started. Unfortunately, Van Dyke was unable to continue his success in the 2022 season, as head coach Manny Diaz was fired in favor of Mario Cristobal. Van Dyke’s first season under Cristobal saw his numbers plummet across the board. He started nine games and throwing for 1,835 yards and 10 touchdowns to five interceptions.

Van Dyke’s final season in Miami didn’t go much better. He played in just seven games as he dealt with injuries. He threw for 16 touchdowns and eight interceptions to go along with 1,884 passing yards, but at the end of the regular season announced he’d be entering the transfer portal as a graduate transfer before committing to Wisconsin two weeks later.
