Paige Bueckers and the UConn Huskies debuted this week as college basketball is underway. Bueckers and the Huskies toppled Boston U 86-32 on Thursday night. The victory set off another season in Storrs with high expectations, and it certainly was as good a start as they could ask for.

Bueckers starred with 13 points, seven assists, and five steals in the lopsided victory. During his postgame press conference, head coach Geno Auriemma gushed over his star player.

“You have to look at it in one big picture,” Auriemma said. “If you have Paige on the floor, everybody gets better on the floor immediately. If you don’t have her on the floor, that doesn’t mean they’re not able to; they just don’t have someone setting it up for them.”

“Obviously, Paige does that for everybody. And Sarah does that quite a bit. But, in that first half, we played half as we had hoped we would play. And then, we wanted to work on some things in the second half, and it showed us we have a lot to work on, which is good. That’s what you want to come out of these games.”

UConn continues its season against South Florida this weekend. Next week, the second-ranked Huskies will play the North Carolina Tar Heels, currently ranked 15th in the country. The tests won’t stop, but with Bueckers, UConn can’t be counted out.
