The Colorado Buffaloes have had an incredible turnaround in the team’s second season under head coach Deion Sanders.
After last season’s bluster and fanfare gave way to a disappointing 4-8 finish, Sanders and the Buffs have kept their heads down and gotten to work this season, leading to a 7-2 record entering their final three games.
Colorado also has a chance to make the College Football Playoff, as they currently hold a one-game lead for second place in the Big 12. If the Buffaloes make and win the Big 12 Championship, they would get the conference’s Playoff spot.
Sanders has emerged as one of college football’s best coaches, and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith doesn’t think the College and Pro Football Hall of Famer should stay with Colorado next year. Instead, Smith says, Sanders should be the head coach of the NFL’s Dallas Cowboys next season. That’s not all, though. Smith also thinks the Cowboys should tank for the rest of the season to secure the first overall pick and draft Sanders’ son Shedeur, Colorado’s current starting quarterback.
“I’ll take it a step further and I’m gonna make people very uncomfortable here,” Smith said. “Prime, we know the brother can recruit. We’re talking about the greatest cornerback in the history of the National Football League. This brother Prime Time Deion Sanders and the job that he’s doing…I believe that the Dallas Cowboys should tank the rest of the season, get the number one overall pick, so you can draft Shedeur Sanders and, by the way, hire Prime Time Deion Sanders as your head coach for the Dallas Cowboys. I think that should be Jerry Jones’ master plan. That’s right, I said it. Hire Prime Time Deion Sanders. You’ve gotta tank the season to make sure you can get his son as your quarterback and you move forward that way. That is what I believe the Dallas Cowboys should do,” Smith said Monday on ESPN’s First Take per On3.
The Cowboys, who Deion Sanders played for from 1995-99 are currently 3-6 and without starting quarterback Dak Prescott for the rest of the season. They are currently picking 11th in the 2025 NFL Draft, which would mean that tanking would require the team not to win another game this season to even have a chance to catch some of the two-win teams ahead of them.
It’s also unlikely that Sanders would be interested in getting involved with the circus owner Jerry Jones has turned the Cowboys into.
