The Louisville Cardinals have made a surprising addition to the roster just days before they open the season against the Austin Peay Governors.
Wide receiver Ahmari Huggins-Bruce is back on the team’s roster, transferring back after transferring to South Carolina earlier in the offseason.
ESPN reported the news on Tuesday, adding that, according to a release from Louisville, Huggins-Bruce would be practicing for the team later that day.
When asked about Huggins-Bruce on Monday, Louisville head coach Jeff Brohm declined to comment.
Huggins-Bruce had four touchdown receptions for Louisville in 2023, which was second on the team. He also had 20 receptions and 312 yards, as he proved to be a consistent contributor for the team. He transferred to South Carolina in December and went through spring and summer practice with the team before leaving the program last week.
It’s unclear why Huggins-Bruce transferred back, but it’s excellent timing for a Louisville team that already lost former South Alabama Jaguars receiver Caullin Lacy to a broken collarbone during a recent scrimmage.
Lacy, who finished fifth in the nation with 91 receptions and 1,316 yards for the Jaguars in the 2023 season, would be able to slide in and replace Louisville’s top 2023 receiver, Jamari Thrash, who graduated. With the depth and injury issues at play, Huggins-Bruce should have a prominent role in the Cardinals’ offense.
