The Boston College Eagles have been one of college football’s biggest surprises this season, cruising to a 2-0 start after wins over the Florida State Seminoles and Duquesne Dukes.
The Eagles’ early-season success has resulted in them being ranked in the AP Poll for the first time since 2018. They check in at No. 24 in this week’s poll before they head to Columbia to face the No. 6 Missouri Tigers.
Speaking to the media on Monday, first-year head coach Bill O’Brien said the support from the Boston College students has been exceptional so far. Still, if the Eagles keep playing well, O’Brien envisions the whole city of Boston getting behind them.
“It’s a great city, and there’s no doubt, you know, it is a pro sports town. It’s got legendary professional sports teams. But, you know, we play on Saturdays. You know, even last Saturday at the Duquesne game, you know, 6,000 students, we only have 9000 students here, so 60% of our student body showed up to the game. That’s really, really good. And so I think if we can get the city of Boston by continuing to play good football, we can get the city of Boston to really, you know, see us play on Saturdays,” O’Brien said during an appearance on SiriusXM via On3.
In the past 15 years, each of Boston’s professional sports has won at least one championship. The city is used to supporting winners, and if Boston College can continue its hot start, it should have no problem latching onto the team.
