The Oregon Ducks defeated the Ohio State Buckeyes in Eugene on Saturday night. However, at the beginning of the game, the Ducks appeared to make a critical miscue.
Ohio State quarterback Will Howard threw a pass that Oregon’s Jeffrey Bassa appeared to intercept. But before anyone could get in some kind of review, the Buckeyes quickly lined up and ran another play.
Some criticized Lanning after the moment, suggesting he should have called timeout to try and get a review sent up. The Ducks head coach explained what happened after the game after a reporter asked him about the situation.
“I was asking–I thought there was going to be a review on the field,” Lanning explained. “I feel like they missed that opportunity and we were trying to get information from up top of if they can see it.”
Lanning added, “You hate to waste a timeout that early if you’re wrong with a potential challenge. But that’s certainly one where you hope it gets buzzed in if it’s close. And it didn’t. I’m not sure why.”
The Oregon coach explained that the emphasis then became “the next play,” which they needed to continue doing. They certainly did in taking down the Buckeyes, a game that Oregon scored one of their biggest wins in program history.
Lanning will lead Oregon into West Lafayette this Friday against Purdue. The Ducks are expected to be heavy favorites.
