Maalik Murphy is in line to be the next quarterback for the Duke Blue Devils. The Texas Longhorns transfer reportedly has won the job and will be under center for the Blue Devils in their 2024 regular season campaign.
ESPN college football insider Pete Thamel reported the news on Monday evening.
“Duke quarterback Maalik Murphy has won the Blue Devil starting job and will start the opener against Elon,” Thamel wrote on X, the website formerly known as Twitter. He continued: “Murphy is a Texas transfer who won both his starts last year for the Longhorns and threw for 477 yards and three touchdowns.”

With Murphy, Quinn Ewers, and Arch Manning in Austin, someone had to be the odd man out. That man was Murphy, who decided to transfer at the end of last season. There was no animosity or strife, just opportunity that Murphy couldn’t pass up. He elected to transfer to Duke in the offseason, which gave the Blue Devils a very talented quarterback.
That talent seems to have won out with the news that Murphy will open the year as their starter against Elon. The Blue Devils aren’t known for their football team, but first-year head coach Manny Diaz hopes to turn the tide in the ACC and bring the Dukies to national relevancy. Under Mike Elko, who is now the head coach at Texas A&M, Duke won nine and eight games respectively in each of the last two seasons.
