Michigan Michigan defensive end Aidan Hutchinson (97) and offensive lineman Andrew Vastardis (68) lead the Wolverines to touch the banner before the first half against Ohio State at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2021.

The Michigan Wolverines have been hamstrung this year. After winning the National Championship in the 2023 college football season, the Wolverine rebounded and immediately fell into the dirt. Quarterback has been an issue all season long. From Davis Warren to Alex Orji to the recently retired Jack Tuttle, Michigan hasn’t gotten it right at the most critical position.

The program’s failure to follow up the National Title-winning season with a competent, even average, offense has led to serious scrutiny. From Warde Manuel to Sherrone Moore, Michigan is feeling the heat. But they appear to at least know what their deficiency is. While that’s not exactly hard to find, news that emerged this week suggests they are in pursuit of a top quarterback in the Class of 2025.

On3 reported that the Wolverines are heavily pursuing top-ranked quarterback Bryce Underwood, a Michigan native and current LSU commit. LSU went into Michigan to land Underwood, but, as always, things aren’t clear until they are.

“Michigan has offered a competitive NIL package on par with what LSU has presented to No. 1 QB recruit Bryce Underwood,” they wrote.

Whether Michigan actually lands Underwood is yet to be seen. In the world of college football, flips aren’t very rare. They happen and they happen frequently. LSU will have to do what they have to do to hold onto Underwood. But there’s no telling where this could go. It might turn into one of the biggest storylines of the offseason. The Wolverines have a huge need. Do they have what it takes to fulfill it?

The college football world reacted to the news.
