The second-ranked Texas Longhorns improved to 3-0 Saturday, cruising to a 56-7 over the UTSA Roadrunners.
It wasn’t all good news for Texas, however.
Starting quarterback and early season Heismqn frontrunner Quinn Ewers left the game early in the second quarter with a non-contact injury and came back out of the locker room in street clothes, spending the rest of the game on the sideline.
It was later revealed that Ewers suffered an oblique strain.
“I think Quinn’s in pretty good spirits. I talked to him on the sidelines there. He was playing such good football. My hope is this isn’t a long-term thing, that we’ll get him back, because we need as many healthy good players as we can get for this journey that we’re on right now,” Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian said after the game via ESPN.
Arch Manning came in to play quarterback for the Longhorns and looked tremendous in his first extended college football action. Manning went 9-for-12 for 223 passing yards and four touchdowns and added a running touchdown on a 67-yard scamper.
Before leaving with the injury, Ewers was also in great form, going 14-for-16 for 185 yards and a pair of touchdown passes to one interception.
It should become more clear throughout the week when Texas expects Ewers back. They close out nonconference play with a home contest against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks, a game in which either Ewers or Manning should be more than capable of bringing home a win.
Texas then opens SEC play against the Mississippi State Bulldogs on September 28 before a bye the week of October 5th. They would presumably want Ewers back for the SEC opener, but would certainly want him back by October 12’s Red River Rivalry against the Oklahoma Sooners.
[Update: 9/15 3:36 p.m. ET] According to Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods, Texas’ Rivals site, Ewers is week-to-week and unlikely to play against ULM
