The Texas Longhorns running back depth took a hit in training camp, with CJ Baxter and Christian Clark both suffering season-ending leg injuries. This left Texas with just three scholarship running backs on their roster entering the season.
Earlier this week, head coach Steve Sarkisian noted that he and the Longhorns were looking to add at the position but knew it would be a challenge this late in the offseason.
On Wednesday, the Longhorns made their move. Texas added former Kansas Jayhawks and SMU Mustangs running back Velton Gardner as a graduate transfer. Danny Davis of The Statesman had the news first.

In his five combined years with Kansas and SMU, Gardner had 229 carries for 1,024 rushing yards and six touchdowns. He entered the transfer portal in July.
Jaydon Blue is still projected to start in the backfield for the Longhorns, but Gardner adds crucial depth for the team.
Social media had a lot to say about the announcement.
