Heading into the season, the Texas Longhorns are a bit thin at running back.

Fall camp saw Steve Sarkisian’s squad lose projected starting back CJ Baxter to a season-ending knee injury and true freshman back Christian Clark suffer a season-ending Achilles injury, leaving the Longhorns with just three scholarship running backs on the roster.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Sarkisian said he and his coaching staff are looking for another back to add to the roster, which can be a challenge this late in the preseason.

“We definitely have a spot that we can utilize. Again, a lot of times this late in the game, it’s probably not a traditional transfer, maybe more of a graduate transfer, something of the sort. So we’re kind of looking at all of our options there,” Sarkisian said via On3.

The coach also mentioned that while it’s important to add someone for depth, you should not add just for the sake of adding.

“We just don’t want to take a body, to take a body. If it’s someone that can help us in some capacity, maybe limited role, bigger role, whatever that is, we are we are looking at all options,” Sarkisian added.

Jaydon Blue, who had 339 yards and two rushing touchdowns for the Longhorns last season, is expected to start and get the bulk of the carries, especially until the depth concern is addressed.

Texas opens its season on August 31 against the Colorado State Rams before heading to Ann Arbor for a Week 2 showdown against the defending national champion Michigan Wolverines.
